PERFUMER'S NOTES
“For this fragrance, I wanted to embody the virility and honour of the gladiator. With a refined OUD, I gave this the very amber, animalic facet of the fierce and courageous fighter.
I added a bold touch of gold with Honey and Hay to celebrate his success.
Finally, as he enters the arena, the respected gladiator is imbued with elegance and refinement by the noble scent of Maximus Decimus Meridius.”
Julien Rasquinet
Master Perfumer
FROM OUR CREATIVE DIRECTOR
“The gladiator we had in mind as our inspiration for this scent is a noble warrior. A victor with the courage, power, wisdom and skill necessary to win in the gladiatorial arena, but also a natural born leader with confidence, integrity and dignity. We imagined a charismatic character commanding deep respect and affection like Maximus Decimus Meridius the legendary Gladiator played by Russell Crowe.
My dream was to create an iconic perfume befitting the name: an addictive and wearable oud combining the skill and physicality of a combat with the nobility of a true leader; all within the impressive theatre of the gladiatorial arena.
To realise this we collaborated with Julien Rasquinet. Gladiator Oud is a magnetic, unisex and effortlessly confident scent. ”

The name “oud” comes from the Arabic al-oud, meaning “wood.” Oud, also known as agarwood and aloeswood, is a tree
from the genus Aquilaria. What makes this tree so unique is its production of a dark, fragrant resin resulting from an
infection of the heartwood by a certain type of mold.
H I S T O R Y & A N E C D O T E S
Oud, commonly known as “Wood of the Gods,” has been marketed and highly coveted for thousand of years.
Its resin is used for medicinal purposes in several Asian cultures and is also part of many religious traditions.

For production of oud, LMR Naturals works with a small family business that has been devoted to agarwood for two generations. In addition, our supplier owns four forests in Vietnam, which is a key asset in controlling quality and origin.
LMR Naturals has succeeded in building a sustainable relationship with the producer to ensure a better quality of life for the family, secure production volumes, and allow them to give back to communities.
Every year since 2014, the oud producer we work with has been able to invest time and money in social initiatives. The
objective is to help Vietnamese populations suffering from extreme poverty and disease. In recent years, the producer has been able to invest more in charitable initiatives.

Hay is made from grass, legumes, or other herbaceous plants that have been cut and dried to be used mainly as animal
fodder. Hay and straw are commonly confused. Hay is made from the stems, leaves, and seed heads of fresh plants, when it has the greatest nutritional and olfactory value.

LMR Naturals’ hay is sourced in the Aubrac region of France. We have worked the same fields for more than 20 years with a supplier resolutely committed to sustainable agriculture.
Our hay comes from a natural grassland at 1,200 meters’ altitude on the Aubrac plateau. After being collected and naturally
dried, the hay is extracted directly at our factory just 20 kilometers from the field.

The name “patchouli” comes from the Tamil paccai (green) and ilia (leaf). Originally from the Philippines, patchouli is fond of the heat and humidity of the Asian tropics.
H I S T O R Y & A N E C D O T E S
Patchouli is native to India and the Philippines. Patchouli leaves have long been used in India and Southeast Asia to protect
precious fabrics and shawls from insects. When these items arrived in Europe permeated with this mysterious smell, it was
considered proof of their Indian origin. When Europeans discovered the source of this fragrance, patchouli quickly became
a tool of seduction, first in high society and then the demi-monde. In the United States, the plant became famous in the late
1960s when young travelers came back from Nepal with patchouli in their bags. The entire hippie generation filled the air
with the fragrant scent of pure patchouli essence. The material represented the new exoticism, rooted in oriental influence
and spirituality.

LMR Naturals established a vertically integrated patchouli sourcing platform in Indonesia.
They developed a contract system with farmers and distillers which allows LMR to buy directly from the distiller, thereby reducing the supply chain, limiting speculation, and insuring better traceability.
In addition, LMR and its partner provide training, distillation and safety equipment, and promote proper agricultural practices
while respecting the environment.

The geranium is a plant native to South Africa, where it grows in the wild. The botanical name “geranium” comes from the
Greek geranos, meaning “crane,” as the fruit of the plant resembles the beak of this bird.
H I S T O R Y & A N E C D O T E S
According to Celtic legend, the crane was the symbol of wisdom, sharing this knowledge by drawing the signs of the Celtic alphabet in the sky. Having crane-shaped fruits, the geranium was therefore offered to the Celtic gods.
Curiously, the geranium used in perfumery is not actually a geranium species, but a pelargonium. Both belong to the Geraniaceae family.
Pelargonium has been cultivated in Europe since the early 17th century. It was introduced in Europe by apothecaries traveling with Dutch explorers from South Africa.
S U S T A I N A B L Y S O U R C E D
In 2013, LMR Naturals established a vertically integrated pelargonium sourcing platform in Egypt. They established an
exclusive and long-term partnership with Hashem Brothers. Their high-quality products have made the company an internationally recognised pioneer in the production of essential oils.
In partnership LMR forged a long-term commitment on prices and volumes, ensuring producers greater financial
security. In addition they promote women’s empowerment, as most of the employees are women.
Lastly, by dealing directly
with farmers, they reduce the number of intermediaries, ensuring a safer and more traceable supply chain.
The result is a product of exceptional quality that is sustainable and competitive.
LMR Naturals was awarded the For Life Social Responsibility certification issued by the certification body Ecocert.
BOTANICAL PROFILE
Immortelle is a plant that grows wild in the Mediterranean region and is known for its small yellow flowers. The scientific name of the plant helichrysum is a contraction of two Greek words helios, meaning“sun,”and chrysos meaning “gold” as the flowers resembles small suns. It is known for having notes of hay, tobacco and honey, sometimes described with curry leaf notes. This immortelle has a fruity cherry alcohol top note on a herbaceous warm tobacco profile.
HISTORY AND ANECDOTES
Also known as ‘the flower that never fades’.
In Greek mythology, Helichrysum was a magnificent woman who decided to keep her chastity and join the temple of the goddess Hestia (Vesta for the Romans). To do this, she refused all wedding proposals but one of her suitors kidnapped and raped her, rendering her plan impossible. She died of grief; on her grave grew a fragrant yellow flower to which the goddess Hestia gave the young woman’s name: Helichryse.
In many cultures, this plant is as a symbol of eternity. In English, it is also called everlasting flower, as the plant, even once dried, can retain its appearance and fragrance for years. It has been widely used in aromatherapy and beauty treatments from the Greeks to the present day due it its anti-oxidant quality and collagen synthesis.
SUSTAINABLY SOURCED
In 2019, LMR Naturals established a vertically integrated immortelle sourcing platform in Serbia. They set up an exclusive and long-term partnership with one of the best producers in the Balkans.
In2008, in an effort to stimulate economic activity in his home town, our partner planted fields of crops, including immortelle and lavender. Today, this project covers 200 hectares(500acres) of plants, including 120 hectares of immortelle, with all operations performed by local residents.
INSPIRATION
GLADIATOR OUD
Inspired by the famed Gladiators of Ancient Rome, courageous warriors who dominated and entertained in the Coliseum, Gladiator Oud opens with a powerful and thrilling accord of salty, elemental ambergris. Cardamom combines with the cool of Egyptian geranium for an impression of steel and strength. Hay absolute, Haitian vetiver and cumin seed capture the sun warmed earth of the gladiatorial arena. Oud oil and cedarwood bring nobility and elegance to the battle, with the gold and glory of victory elicited through accords of intense saffron and honey.
